If you struggle to make sense of your topic, it's probably due to a weak thesis statement. Understanding what makes a good thesis statement is one of the essential keys to writing a challenging essay. The thesis statement is where you make a claim that will guide you through your entire topic.
First, let's take a minute to understand what makes a good thesis statement by taking an example.
Example: To make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you must obtain the ingredients, find a knife, and spread the seasonings. This thesis showed the reader the topic (a sandwich) and the direction the essay will take (describing how the sandwich is made).
Still, Stuck? Need some help in knowing what the thesis writing exactly is? So let me clarify what I mean by the term "thesis statement."
As we will be using the term this semester, a thesis statement is not necessarily a sentence that appears in the first paragraph of your essay. Your thesis statement may appear in the first paragraph or the last paragraph, or it may not appear in the essay at all. I do not mean by a thesis statement something that you essentially write before writing the essay. I will often ask you to write a "trial thesis statement" before submitting a draft of your essay; the term "trial" means that this is not a thesis statement you are devoted to. The only reason for asking for a trial thesis statement is to have something to discuss in class. You will generally not finish writing your thesis statement until you have nearly completed writing and revising your essay.
So what is a thesis statement? A thesis statement is a statement that states what you want your readers to know, believe, or understand after reading your essay. If we understand that definition, it will be easier to work with thesis statements.
The method of representing a thesis statement can differ depending on the intention of the work. The thesis statement can be Analytical, Declarative, and Argumentative. The type of research determines the form of a thesis statement.
In this type, you don't have to make influential arguments, but you have to examine, understand, and assess several subject points. In this case, it should highlight the main features of the analysis and introduce the conclusion.
This type is proper when the purpose is to clarify and discuss the facts on a specific subject. The essay should sum up the key points that will be covered during the writing.
If the essay's primary focus is to convince the reader about a statement, then we can use this type in the thesis statement. To make it convincing, you can add the reason or logic behind it to argue the statement.
If you are confused about writing a Good Thesis Statement, then below, we have given you the tips for writing a good thesis statement.
1. Confident: Your thesis statement must define clearly what you want to prove with the essay. Although your conclusions can be careful, your essay should be preferably strong.
2. Precise: The essay should be precise, even as making your stance clear. One sentence should be sufficient for shorter papers. It must include all the information in a single statement and must not repeat the Introduction as well.
3. Well-positioned: It should be well positioned and included in the Introduction. In most cases, it should be included at the very end.
4. Singular: The thesis statement should contain only one clear idea keeping the paper focused. If you do not discuss the single concept, then your article will quickly lose its way. In this way, you will not be able to answer the significant points, and the reader will also get puzzled during the discussion. So try to stick to the main idea to achieve uniqueness.
5. Firmness: Your essay should point towards what you consider in the paper. Writing a true statement can be the most challenging part of the essay. Make sure your essay will tell the reader precisely what you are trying to recommend. Always remember that the thesis statement is not the subject of the article. It is a point of view; you can say an explanation of the subject.
A thesis statement is a term that defines what you want your article to prove. It should also give a good reason for the requirement for discussion and why you chose the particular topic for your paper. Therefore based on the above-given information and discussion in the article, you can now form a thesis statement that will guide you through compiling your thesis.
